# [Hospital Security Has Worsened During Coronavirus Crisis | Five To Save](https://www.z5inventory.com/blog/hospital-security-has-worsened-during-coronavirus-crisis-five-to-save)

As if you needed another thing to worry about...

[We've said it before](https://www.z5inventory.com/blog/5-ways-to-strengthen-your-healthcare-cybersecurity), and we'll say it again: data breaches are not only a constant threat to healthcare providers, but also easy to overlook while everyone is focused on providing the best possible care for patients.

And the threat has [escalated during the coronavirus crisis](https://www.z5inventory.com/blog/5-questions-that-will-show-you-a-tech-vendors-quality). Bad actors know you're distracted. And, if we're perfectly honest, [being stressed and overworked](https://www.z5inventory.com/blog/five-to-save-how-pandemic-hurts-hospital-employees) has led us all to let some things slide.

Which leads us to our first story this week:

1. The [Mayo Clinic leaked patient data](https://www.startribune.com/former-mayo-clinic-employee-improperly-accessed-1-600-plus-patient-health-records/572655892/) recently by not controlling where and how patient data was accessible.
2. They're also transferring a large number of [employees to work from home](https://www.beckershospitalreview.com/workforce/mayo-clinic-to-allow-1-500-employees-to-work-from-home-long-term.html). Those two pieces of news combined make us seriously wonder about what security practices they're enforcing with their remote staff.
3. And breaches are not without consequences. [CHS is settling a lawsuit](https://www.beckershospitalreview.com/cybersecurity/chs-settles-patient-data-breach-for-5m.html) over leaked patient data and a vendor for healthcare providers, [Blackbaud, is doing the same](https://www.classaction.org/news/blackbaud-hit-with-class-action-over-data-breach-stemming-from-three-month-ransomware-attack). That's on top of any ransom they already paid to have ransomware removed.
4. So why aren't more providers more secure? Why aren't they [asking their vendors about security practices](https://www.z5inventory.com/blog/5-questions-that-will-show-you-a-tech-vendors-quality) that might expose them and their patients? Evidence suggests the problem isn't that they aren't technologically capable -- [it's that change is scary](https://epsnews.com/2020/10/08/supply-chain-focuses-on-matters-within-its-control/).
5. So congratulations are well earned by our friends at Duke and Yale New Haven for being named among healthcare's [Most Wired by CHIME](https://chimecentral.org/chime-most-wired-2/?fbclid=IwAR0dTWXEDBONqwm5ej3BbSMWRGFIw4FbwGUijeTIn-hwBSuHI3NwJr9dfLs#tab_ert_pane1-0). Though, the presence of the Mayo Clinic on the list - plus our own bias toward mobility - does make us wonder if a better award might be Most Wireless in health.

That's an interesting idea. [Some awards](https://www.z5inventory.com/blog/most-expired-awards) - especially as we approach the end of the year - might not be such a bad idea...
